Six-month engagement · partners in business and in life

The Partnership Decision

price upon request

Structured work for two or more people facing a decision that touches both the business and the relationship.

individual work

Best for

Business partners who are also life partners or family: spouses, siblings, parent and adult child, longtime co-founders. When the business frame alone can't hold the decision, and the relationship frame alone can't either.

When the business and the relationship are the same thing.

You built something together. Maybe you are married, maybe you are siblings, maybe one of you is the parent and one is the adult child who is supposed to take over. Maybe you are co-founders who have been through enough together that it stopped being only business a long time ago.

And now something has shifted. One of you wants to grow and the other wants out. A succession plan exists on paper but no one believes it. A role that made sense ten years ago doesn't anymore. The arguments at work come home, and the arguments at home come to work. You can't talk about the business without talking about the relationship, and you can't talk about the relationship without the business in the room.

Most advisors only see half of this. Your lawyer, your accountant, and your business consultant see the business. A couples therapist sees the relationship. This work is built for the place where the two overlap.

Situations people bring

  • One partner wants to step back, sell, or leave, and the other doesn't
  • A succession between generations that keeps stalling
  • Roles and authority that no longer match who does the work
  • Siblings or co-founders whose visions for the business have split apart
  • A relationship change, including separation, while the business still has to run
  • Recurring conflict that is costing the business money and costing you both your peace

How it works

The work runs across six months in four phases.

  • 1. Defining the question. We meet together to name what you are actually deciding, what each of you hopes for, and what a good outcome would look like, even if you don't yet agree.
  • 2. Each perspective on its own. With both partners' agreement, I encourage individual sessions. Some things are hard to say fully with the other person in the room, and hearing each perspective without that filter helps me understand the real depth of the situation. Anything important that surfaces here, we find a way to bring into the joint work.
  • 3. Working it through together. Joint sessions on the dynamics, the options, and the conversations you have been avoiding. We separate what belongs to the business from what belongs to the relationship, so each can be addressed on its own terms.
  • 4. Decision and design. Whatever you decide, we turn it into a plan: new roles, a new agreement, a transition timeline, or a well-designed ending.

Partway through, you both receive a written synthesis of what we have identified: the forces keeping the situation stuck, where each of you stands, and the realistic options ahead. We refine it as the work develops.

What this is not

This is not couples therapy, mediation, or legal advice. I don't make decisions for you or push you toward a particular outcome. When the work needs a lawyer, a financial advisor, or a therapist, I will say so and can coordinate with them.

Questions you might have

Will you take sides?

No. My client is the partnership, not either one of you. The goal is to create a space where it stops feeling like a matter of sides or a zero-sum game, and where you both actually feel that. From there, you can talk through difficult matters safely, and eventually do it on your own.

What if one of us is more reluctant than the other?

That is common, and it is fine. The first conversation is for both of you to decide whether this fits. Nobody has to commit before then.

Is the goal to keep us together, or to split us up?

Neither. Some partners come out of this with a stronger partnership and clearer roles. Some change how they work together. Some decide to separate the business from the relationship, or to end one of them, and do it deliberately instead of through years of damage. The goal is a decision you both can live with.

Why six months?

Because a situation involving both a business and a relationship rarely resolves in a few conversations. Six months gives room to decide carefully and to test the decision in real life before the work ends.

What if there are more than two of us?

This work can include up to four participants. For example, two parents and two adult children, three siblings, or two founders and their spouses. The structure stays the same: we define the shared question together, meet with each person individually with everyone's agreement, and work through it as a group. With more people in the room, it matters even more that no one feels outnumbered, and I hold that carefully throughout.

Do we meet online or in person?

If you are in the Denver area, we can meet in person as often as you like. Otherwise, online works very well. In my experience, it gives excellent results when both partners are committed to the work.

How much does it cost?

Pricing depends on the number of people involved and the scope of the work. We'll discuss it after the first conversation, with no obligation.
